The First Tastes Of Dirt (Mud)
Got out on dirt for the first time since, I think late December. Felt gggggggoood.
Hit up Boyce. There were a TON of cars parked near the archery field. There, must have been a PORC ride or something. On the trail I only saw one rider (twice) sporting a fulls suspension Garry Fisher 29er.
The trails were better than I expected in parts, and worse than I expected in parts. I had planned to skip all the usual muddy spots entirely but the trees at Boyce are mostly dead, dying, or mildly suicidal. Winter can pretty much have its way with them. Pushing them down with even the weakest of storms, so several reroutes were needed and that interrupted said plan.
The mud at Boyce is the tires worst enemy. It's either HEAVY stick to everything mud or slicker than K-Y. Tonight's mud was mostly the HEAVY shit. Figured it just upped the workout stats.
I would be more critical of the Rampages, but I've said it a million times- there is NO tire I've used that hasn't clogged up for me at Boyce. Bontragers, Panaracer, WTB, Maxxis. The mud there is just evil. It's Satan's feecus!
Muddy 1 " in The Rear
The first ride on dirt after a layoff, with nothing but road miles and trainer time is kind of a slap in the nuts. The skills were on, fitness was pretty good, but I realized what still needs to be done, and now I'm a bit happy that I still have a little over a month to work on the perceived problems.
Really, I just need MORE time on the dirt. There were parts of the ride I was real happy about. Ended with a just 1:30 of riding, but it was a nice workout. Not sure what the weather holds for the rest of the week. Looks like by the weekend I'll be on the trainer again. Booooo!
Sorry for kind of a shit post.
Later.
P.S. Thanks Dillon. Good luck with the Hammer Products.

By the the look of the bike, you should just finish the trash job at mingo and ride through the 3 ft deep horse piss puddles. I 'm sure you will perfect your dirt strategy again! I envy the 29'er. . . Peace!

Aint that first ride on dirt after a long time away great?
Glad we don't have to deal with the horses at Boyce. Oddly that mud was only from one or two small areas. Many of the "upper loops" were tacky/dry. Today's rain put an end to that though.
Allan, you know it. To this day I still get a tad nervous before that first ride, but within a mile it's feels DAMN good ;)

As you know, I am pretty much of a roadie (I know, I know), but I have been getting out on the dirt a bit more this year. I rode French Creek State Park for a couple hours on Saturday, and then hit Wissahickon last night for an hour and a half. Got pretty caked with goo on both rides. Great Stuff! MTB'ing shows me just how much more work I need to do to get in good shape. I am in Zone 5 most of the time, I think.
