Lust For Dirt: By Pervy Pervison
Damn it felt good to be on dirt today. As I was telling Wifey this afternoon, the road is great for training and getting the miles in, and the last two weeks or so I racked up some nice miles/hours, but damn is it nice to cruise through the woods and never have to worry that the a car full of teens swilling Bush Light 40 Ouncers is gonna make you into another stat.
I know that's grim, but it's a sad fact. And when you start feeling like that there is NO better cure than some chamois time in the dirt.
I slept like SHIT last night and pulled MAYBE 4 or 5 hours total, but I was geeked at the prospect of time in the woods on my Dos Niner. It looked like rain with the return of WPA's normal coat of of thick gray clouds overhead, so my java and PBJ sammy barely hit bottom and I was already getting the boyz in the chamois and heading out the door.
The mission was simple. Find a dryish 7 to 8 mile loop, do it a few times, dial in my new Lake shoes, the Dos, nutrition and skills with some hours in the dirt. I was stoked to find the trails in great condition! NO peanut butter mud except for some random service road area and a bubbling spring area. Most of the trails were either bone dry or nice and tacky. I almost had a Cham-oner (don't ask).
I was had the new Lake 230s on for the first time today, so I wanted to make sure my cleat position was dialed in and my saddle height was good etc. I don't need any bum knees. Ever notice certain shoes make you have to adjust saddle height?
After my first 8 mile mile lap I stopped at the Soob and adjusted my right cleat. Felt like it was too far forward and I felt like my saddle needed raised a hair.
The shoes felt great on my feet. A LITTLE heavier than my Sidi Bullets, but comfy. And walking/running in them looks like it will be great. Not hard, slip-fall and break you balls, plastic soles or clickity-clacks when you walk. Time will tell of course. This was but just one ride.
Nutrition wise I wore the CamelToe® for the first time in ages. Filled with Heed and I had a T6 bottle filled with a Hammer Nut cocktail.
Nothing like a little deer shit and mud to wash down your Perpetuem/Gel. I'll just be hovering above the shitter for a bit longer, no biggie.
All in all a great day in the saddle. Did 3 laps + a little side trail and put in 3 hours of tight ass single track. The Dos felt great, the shoes (after adjustment) felt great, nutrition was working, and the skills were spot on.
I was happy. Can you tell?
After the ride I did some cross training by doing some yard work and TRIED to make our back yard look like something that people will at least ignore, rather than walk by in disgust.
Time to drink a couple Sierra Nevadas (my new standby brew) and gobble some Guiltless Gourmet chips (that SOMEhow still manage to make me feel guilty)
Cooking up some White Trash Mexican for me and Wifey tonight. Then maybe a game of Puma Loco vs. The Evil Mamasita later. (if B-Man will go to bed when he's supposed to) ;) Sorry.
Later.

Still looking for shoes for my "yeti like" feet. I have narrowed it to three models the lakes that you are sporting, the ole stand-by of sidi bullets, and the pearl M2 juice. Prices range from around $100 - $160's. I have been leaning towards the pearls due to price, but I can't find anyone who uses them. The lakes are more cash, but you seem pretty happy! Let me know if you still dig'em after a couple more rides.
I agree the sole of the sidi's need improvement, but htey sho do fit nice!
Will do on the feed back. Man, I don't know how you find ANY shoes for thoe gun boats! HA!
