I'm Down! (For Now)

So I get up this morning to you guesses it! More rain. But from looking weather.com it looked as if the worst of it would be heading out of the area by noon or so. I figured I'd put the Campeon in the back of the Soob to keep it out of the heavy rains all a.m. and hope for the rain to get the hell out of here by 5.

Well, I'm bending over putting the bike in the Soob, I'm sort of bent in cock-eyed position, stand up and WHAM! My lower back freezes up! A thousand "mother f*ckers" are being shouted in my head and I try not let them out for the entire neighborhood to hear.

First reactions aren't about getting to work, or the pain- It's "I HAVE A FRIGGIN' RACE IN FOUR DAYS!!" and "WHAT ABOUT MY FRIGGIN' RIDE TONIGHT???".

It doesn't hurt when I sit or stand. But the process of sitting/standing sucks or quick movements (I have none). I hung out at work for half a day and then said "f*ck it". Going home to do ice and heat. Now I've just finished an hour of laying on the rumpus room floor alternating ice and the heating pad, taking Aleve like candy and listing to Tapes 'n Tapes on iTunes. Great friggin' day. The Cycling God's are paying me back for SOMETHING, not sure what, but SOMETHING!

Time for more ice/heat. After the first round it's starting to feel looser, but that could be the Aleve too. I feel like I haven't been on the bike in days. Oh wait, I HAVEN'T BEEN ON THE BIKE IN DAYS! Might try to climb on the trainer later if I can get the rusted p.o.s. that is Booger to get out of 53/12!

Later.

P.M. EDIT: Tried to get on the trainer. I could pedal fine, but other movements bothered the back a bit. So I aborted and went back to laying on the floor with my legs raised. Seems to be helping even more and I'm hopeful for riding tomorrow. Racing is questionable on Saturday, but at least I have a few days to try to get it in shape. With Big Bear 3 weeks away I need to make sure it's all good. Later.

p.s. Did you hear that sound? That's the sound of my ever fattening belly from not riding for 3 days!

Dang, bro, that bites! Been there many times myself. Try doing the old knees to chest stretch while on the heat...gently, gently. Hope you heal up in time to race.

Have you thought about seeing a chiropractor? I have been seeing them for years. Money well spent in my book.

Hope you feel better soon, I know how you feel. For me, walking is the best medicine after a good crack from the Doc.

Jason, that bites.

Not sure what you've got going on, but for me, heat is the worst enemy. I've got a degenerative disc and the heat just causes more pain. My routine is ice and stretching, ice and stretching. Much like the process of ice/heat. I always end with stretching.

I agree with above poster on the Chiro. Money well spent for me. That said, my combo of stretching and core body strengthening has kept me from the Chiro for 1 year.

Good luck. Call me or email me if you have any questions.

Bet its a muscle thing and it loosens up by weekend. And if not, the fact that being on a bike is less painful than anything you have tried is good. I once had a back thing and the only comfortable position was my riding position, and when I rode it loosened everything else up. Just don't do any mucle endurance intervals between now and then. And watch..., all this time off the bike will end up boding well for your race. Good luck!

I'll have some ballz too.

Thanks guys. I may explore some chiros in the area tomorrow if things aren't loosening up.

Man, I never saw so many folks talk about my ballz. It's not even Friday!

:) someday I owe you all a big plate of Chamois Ballz.

Time for bed and the friggin' heating pad.

Later.

Ouch dude those out of no where injuries are the worst, especially the lifting and twisting ones. I hope that heals up quickly for ya. It sounds like you’ve got a plan. Hey if you get a minute shoot me an email tomorrow I have some Dos setup questions that I’d like to ask you but I don’t know your email. Mine is TSWimba at the gmail dot com domain.

Peace,
Metro

Start swimming mate. I had similar problems in the beginning of the year. Started swimming an it gave some support while at the same time fighting off the sounds of belly growth

Back tweaks suck! Sometimes folks in better shape are more prone to little injuries because of the toned muscles.

This is great stuff:

Good luck!

you should give big gay al a call to see what he did. He fell down the stairs recently and wrenched his back. second thought, he's been forced off his mtb for over two weeks so his advice might not work.

good luck with the healing.

Oh Jason, man... I'm sorry to hear about your back. I've struggled with intermittent back issues over the years. I think a lot of cyclists go through bouts with it. It's hard to get strong and stay symmetrical, especially on a mountain bike, when wipeouts and stuff happen. My body is still fighting off the effects of an endo from three weeks ago.

Listen to your body. If you need rest, rest. If you need an extended rest - do it now. It does you no good to ride hurt, then still have to take time off in July. Think about it. Just get it done now and heal yourself right. I have a friend here in Nebraska who is (as I type this) fighting with a back injury that he's been struggling with for more than a year because he's never taken the time off the bike that he's actually needed to get himself all the way better. It's sad to see. He's wasted two full seasons now without competing in a single race because of it... I'm not saying you're in the same boat, but I'd hate to see you get to that point. Please don't let it get to that point Jason.
