2 + 2 = 5 / Cross & Jungle Cross
2 + 2 = 5 (thank you Radiohead)
The simplest questions do NOT always have the easiest answers. The past couple weeks have been a shit storm of work issues, continued Clot related doctors appointments and angst. It was also the wrong week/weeks to stop sniffing "glue" in the name of weight loss. I'm hoping for easier times this week.
I took these pics of B-Man yesterday....
There's a metaphor for enjoying the moment in these pics somewhere. I just don't have the literary talent to put down the words. So I will let my sub par photography skills do the talking and just enjoy looking at my boy and his desire (like life) to keep moving.Bike related goodness...
This coming week's Master D. Bate- Should I put a rigid carbon fork on my Mamasita to race Cross in 2009 or save my pennies for an '09 Chili Complete? Hmmm. THESE are the things I like to focus on. I'd like to say that doing two cross races meant nothing to me. But I can't. They were hard. I sucked and I now am sort of obsessed with trying more next year in attempts to get better or at least not suck as hard.
About this time last year I had the chance to get a Chili Con Crosso, La Cruz or a Campeon. My Inner Roadie spoke up and I went with the Campeon. It's fantastic bike and I don't regret it all. But like seeing a hot ass that you can't touch, I can't help but now wonder "what if?".
Cross related... I think there needs to be more "Jungle Cross" races. I borrow that term from Gerry P.. I believe he used that to describe one of the M.o.M. races. What I'm saying is, is that I'd like to see/do a Cross race that is just a TAD longer than most suburban park courses. Still laps, but say 3 to 4 miles in length, throw in a couple more hike a bikes, a few more dirt roads, a little more climbing and a little more beer.
E mailing with Don P. about Cross friendly rides at Boyce Park got me thinking about all that. I know there's a fine line between Cross, XC, and Short Track XC. But I'm willing to ride that fine line. I envision a race that makes having a bike like the La Cruz or a rigid Mamasita with skinny ass knobby tires, look like the best option. I would dig that!
Oh well time to stop talking out my rectum and START going to bed. A week of work "change" and "managerial rah-rah bull shit double speak" is upon me. I better rest up.
Later.
EDIT: With a nudge from a Chamois commenter, I have to mention that part of today's blog title is also In homage to Mr. Orwell and Mr. Winston Smith. Also to say, by the end of the week, I have no doubt that I WILL believe that 2 and 2 ALWAYS MAKES 5. Seriously. It does. IT DOES! IT IS!!!!!! It HAS TO! At least for couple weeks!

don't you mean thank you George Orwell?
But I dig that song- so Radiohead it is! ;)
If you are going to get into cross, just jump in the deep end - get the Chili. Don't bastardize the mamasita, you know you will still be thinking about the Chili anyhow. I enjoy the Blog. I raced with you at 7-Springs last year (I was one of the team guys - not solo)
For what you're doing with cross right now, I think the mamasita is fine. Rigid fork or no rigid fork.
Yeah you'll not be as fast as you could be on the real cross courses, but you'll be just as fast, if not faster on the courses like Grove City and Wendy Park or places that are really rutty. On the other courses, even just switching out tires will make a big difference. It's ridiculous, but tire selection is actually important in cross.
And for instance, the guy that won the sport/Masters class at the MoM did it on an old late 90s trek hardtail. He also was winning and at worst placing in the top 5 at the Cleveland Lake Effect series.
There's a lot of fun to be had, without dropping serious cash.
Nice 1984 reference! I just reread it this summer, very appropriate time politically to read it. The rats at the end creeped me out.
