Basking In The Glow
Don and Brad convinced me (OK, shamed me) into breaking me out of winter trainer hibernation and heading to Boyce with them for a ride in the snow today. Goddamn am I glad I did. It felt so freaking good to be in the woods on my bike.
We lucked out and after having temps in the 40s yesterday, they shot down like a bullet into the 20s today. This made the trails a combination of hard pack and ice, but without a trace of mud! I think the Mamasita is cleaner now than when I started the ride.
There were a few deep snow hike-a-bikes, and some slick ice patches that threw each one of us down at least once. But it was a hell of a work out and a blast nonetheless. I'm so geeked I went! Thanks for the shaming Don! Aaron did his share of shaming me into going too, but somehow didn't make it today. Maybe the next time? ;)
I felt strangely good on the bike. Granted it was hard to get a real gauge given the conditions, but I felt pretty spanky. Maybe it was just being outside to ride or maybe it was the 8ish pounds I've lost, but I'm feeling pretty good about my January fitness and look forward to next weekends Snotcycle race in Leesburg.
In the end it tooks us over two hours do 13ish miles, but it was a blast. Even smacking my elbow on the ice couldn't stop me from enjoying a ride in the woods with some good riding buddies.
The funny thing about the pic above is that it was taken at about mile 3 and my bottles were already slushed up. Nice!I'm working on a new "project". I've been pretty obsessed with it lately. I was gonna save working on it until after I "voluntarily separate" from my employer, but figured "what the f*ck?" and have been knocking out some work on it. It's bike related of course and I hope to make some more progress on it in the next few days so that I feel more comfy sharing it with you all. Stay tuned. You might dig it... OR you might think it's shit. Either way, I'm happy to have some new motivation and goals for life.
Later.

I'm not sure you could have taken a worse picture of me - what am I doing, eating? I look homeless.
I mounted up the Ergons - plan to give them a test ride tomorrow. Damn they are fugly.
Man I need to shave...Brad & I look like Hobos. But gotta keep the playoff beard until the Steelers win the SB. Thanks for the old Ergons, they should help with the old beater SS. How's the elbow?
Look out Leesburg VA, 2 homeless looking guys are coming!
Yeah man, I was really looking forward to todays ride, but Thursday night I fell ill with some sort of food poisoning (peanut butter related salmonella from clif-bars?). Anyway, I spent all of Thursday night up, near the porcelain gods, and then all day Friday. Finally got about 2 hours of sleep last night, 5:30-7:30. Finally ate solid food around 10am today. Sucked. but I'm feeling better and eating now.
Hopefully you come out for some more rides.
Brad- Glad to give some old shit a new home. Test them out. If you dig 'em you can always get some in black from Bikeman.com.
When I first looked at the pic of you I thought you may have been chewing tobacco. Then I remembered the bar you were eating.
F.Y.I. I like to surround myself with folks taking on the appearance of the homeless. Makes me look better.
Don- I've made a similar pledge. I decided last summer not to "manscape" until I podium. Right now I'm not sure I even have a penis. Then again, Wifey has never been sure.
Aaron- mmmmmman sorry to hear that. I had a similar thing happen to me while on vacation on in Crested Butte one time. Wifey was so concerned she was asking everyone in C.B. for advice. When I finally exited our condo 24 hours later, I think everyone in town asked me if I was feeling better. Nothing like having a whole mountain town kowing you had the shitz. Nice. Real f*cking nice.
Get better man. I will indeed be out for more rides.
oh, yeah Don.. I listened to that Girl Talk CD. The part when that Master of Puppets sample kicks in is classic.
Bro, I have to admit that I am supremely jealous - leaving the old work gig to do something you actually like??!?! It's a dream of mine! I like the vibe you've got going right now- I think you've got great things ahead for you.
