A Little Bit Felt Like Much Less

I am in utter shock at the fact that today has me entering my sixth day off the bike. I can not remember the last time I spent this long off the bike. It REALLY sucks. Not just being off the bike, but NO training what-so -ever! No core, no cross training, not one sweat had! My body was just destroyed by this flu funk I got.

I did actually spin my legs for about 5 minutes on the trainer just to remind them of why they're attached to my torso. I had planned on going for 30 to 45 minutes, but my heart rate monitor refused to work properly and even though I was not really using it to monitor my HR today, but just for time, it was driving me CRAZY!! First I could NOT get a signal *NO SIGNAL* *NO SIGNAL* NO SIGNAL* flashing over and over as I tried to get it going. I swear to God I wanted to smash it with a hammer (and still might!). FINALLY I got a signal, starting spinning and noticed that no matter how fast I went my heart rater would hover at around 113 max.... so I stated pedaling harder and saw it go DOWN to 108!!

Can someone, somebody, something, MAKE A F*CKING HEART RATE MONITOR THAT WORKS!!! I can't even begin to tell you how much hate I have for heart rate monitors right now (Sigma monitors in particular). And while I'm throwing hate around... To person that passed this viral germ to me and brought my training to a dead 1 hour and zero miles on the week stop I salute you with multiple middle fingers, and f-bombs.

OK, glad I got all that out of my system.

Later.

Trash that thing. All those contraptions serve is to distract and limit you.

I used to rely on my HR so much that I would back off my pace if it was 'too high' - even if I felt great. Or 3 hrs into a 12hr race my computer would start to F with me as I would start doing math and figuring exactly how much more time I had to suffer or how much I was slowing down...bad thoughts.

Now I ride blind, just trust how I feel and I think it has helped me to just go and stop thinking so much. And now I have a good idea of how fast I am going, when I am above LT, when a bonk is coming, when to eat and drink.

I think technology can work for serious racers who have coaches or those with structured programs but its just mental clutter for me.

luddite out...

PS..Get on your bike(s)!!

I have a Polar F11 and it works pretty well. You can get replacement parts and change the batteries yourself on the strap. Plus it has signal blockers so you get less interference. No real issues with it to date after pitching my Cat Eye.

it's probably just that the battery is getting low. change the battery in the strap and then smash it if it still isn't working right.

it also depend upon what computers you are using on your bike, and what else is going on there.

I had a sigma hrm and with my sigma wireless bike computers it would have issues. Even with the polar hrm I have now, I sometimes get "too many signals" flashing across the bike computers and stuff.

I def think you should use the hrm on the trainer, but sometimes, you've just got to chalk up a shitty day to a shitty day and turn the thing off and instead turn to your favorite climbs of the tour, clips of roubaix, or whatever does it for you.

Dude, I have much sympathy for you. I too came up snake eyes with the crud. Frig! To watch carefully worked fitness go down the sink (two weeks off) with so much phlem. My princess got me on garlic and cayenne pills with some other herbs with guaifenisin to get that stuff moving. "We like to move it move it!" Carry on soldier and thanks for the blog.

I got the sickness too. Three light days followed by the last three totally off the bike. My issue has been extreme congestion, not able to breath through my nose at all and nothing seemed to help, nasal flushes - no, cold meds - no. Finally feeling better today and hoping to be able to ride lightly tomorrow.

Get well soon. Must be worse when you got a new bike and cannot ride it.
