Salsa Big Mama- Done

I'm so done. I'm so toast. I've so had it. My attempts at Super Slumber were FOILED!! I slept a total of 2.5 hours last night. I guess sleeping 40 of the previous 48 hours jacked up my sleep rhythms or something? On top of that, the illness WILL. NOT. GO. AWAY!! Suckerfruckfarkinsucklottafrig!!!!

Having said all that, Chuck @ Pro Bikes called me today to let me know that the Big Mama was ready and I could go pick it up. So I loaded my hacking, zombie-esque ass in the xB and headed to the land of soccer moms, strip malls, and red lights to pick 'er up.

She looks great. Super happy with the build and I have to thank Ralph for doing a great job on the build. Double J also did a great job of keeping me posted on what was going down with the build and relaying some info between myself and Ralphy.

As I mentioned yesterday, I wasn't OVERLY concerned about weight, but with the Salsa "complete" Big Mama (medium without pedals) coming in at 29.5, I was unsure if my LARGE Big Mama would be able to stay under 30!

As Chuck took it to the shop scale I said "I really hope it comes in under 30" he laughed and said "I'm really hoping for a Ferrari too, but I don't see that happening". He puts it on the the scale, it does its thang and BOOM- 28.5 with pedals. Nice.

I still have to dial in the shocks more, adjust my grips, etc., but she is looking good! Very happy with the bike. Can't wait to feel well enough to get her on the trails! Big Mama is going to compliment my bike quiver very nicely. Thank you Salsa and thank you Pro Bikes for getting her all built up for me.

Time to cooks some Valentines Day steak, lay about and NOT "get any" due to being a sicky sickerton.

Frig.

Later.

Beauty. Heavy (though it's not all that heavy) just like big girls - the bigger the cushion, the better the push'in.

New bikes is like... oh well never mind...

OBR- 28.5 is heavy. SORT of. Look at what you get- Large frame, 29" wheels, 4" front/back, very comparable to other FS 29ers (Pivot might be less but at a SICK cost) and yes, I'll take bigger cushion if it means better pushin'! Ride over, into, over anything in my path in my attempts to come in 17th! HA!

Metro- Right you are sir. If I had to have ONE bike it would be the Dos Niner. BUT I'm one lucky son-of-a-bitch and was able to get a second. Having a 28.5 lb. FS and a 24ish lb. soft tail fits my riding style best. Yeah, if I was a 130 lb. dwarf doing 1.5 hour races, I'd want the lightest, bike I could get my tiny little legs on. BUT I'm a 37 year old 185 lb. doofuss who needs all the help he can get! HA!

The bottom line is- How does it handle? How does my bod feel after 12 hours? How well do I recover? THAT is key!

p.s. Red wine is SOOOOO much better than Niquil®!!

Jason, Serena looks great. That thing is one light wheelset away from one tough mother.

I know some of the answers you ask. I've only ridden my Dos about a dozen times since I built my BM. It's a lot faster than you think. Trust me.

You're gonna want to be healthy to ride the Big Momma. It's not called the Big Momma for no reason. This bike it a PIG on climbs. I test rode one a couple months ago on the local mountain. I didn't know if I was going to make it up the 3 mile climb the thing sucked so bad. Downhill it was butter, but it is suppose to be a XC bike. Reminded me of riding a Pro-Flex. Hardtail is where it's at with 29er's. Who wants to carry 30lbs uphill? Too much work and no fun. Good Luck with the beast.
