More Things I Said I Wouldn't Do

Sadly, no ride today. That sucks too, 'cause the sun was out and it had thing warming up a bit more than yesterday (40s!!). Had to finish up some stories, mail some swag, and other fun stuff.

I realized I failed to mention yesterday, that the past 3 rides, I did what I usually do NOT do, and that is ride with my iPod. I'm not really fan, or I should say... I had NOT been a fan. But I figured WTF? I only use one earphone in my right ear, and leave the left open to hear traffic, and motorists screaming obscenities at me.
So far it's been really cool to have some added motivation. Although the first ride, I took Wifey's little pink Shuffle** and I had it loaded ONLY with Motorhead, and ONLY with about 20 songs. FAIL! Lets just say after almost 3.5 hours, there are songs that I'll be fine with NEVER hearing again.

The next couple rides I took my iPod with a very much expanded play list. And was MUCH better. Note: Foals are just awesome to ride to.

Not 100% sure if I could ride in the woods with one, I sort of like to hear what the woods and the mountain are saying. It's good for the head, the mind, AND the brain (comically and karmically speaking of course). I MIGHT be able to race with one ear bud in, at least after a few laps when shit gets boring.

So file all this in the Big Bin Of Things Jason Said He Wouldn't Do along with use front suspension, night ride, ride a 29er, ride a full suspension, wear bib shorts, get a road bike, ride a mountain bike on the road, wear a thong, etc., etc.,

On the plus side of today, I mapped out a 50 mile local ghetto back road loop. So that is pretty sweet. BTW have you checked out the Google Earth "fly over" option on MapMyRide.com? Freaking cool!

Later.

**Please note that the Pink Shuffle is NOT an Official Don Powers Approved Manly Cycling Accessory. Along with mountain bikes ridden on the road, and soon to be riding with more than one gear and/or front suspension. Use at your own risk, lest ye be mocked by Don.

Using a mtb on the road is Don approved...bragging about not using your granny gear while riding on the road is not Don approved.

Anyway it is all payback for the messages you eched into the dirt on my Xterra a couple months back.

You should rock out your Ipod for the LBD. Lemmy will motivate you into doing a few more laps than normal.

LOL! Not sure I'd call what I said "bragging". Racers who have never won ANYTHING usually aren't too prone to doing that. My bad.

Morrissey will get you in the end. Wait, that doesn't sound that good....

Lemmy for the LBD. He will be there in some form for sure.

I know you weren't bragging. Anyway, maybe I'll join you sometime on your newly mapped out 50 mile ghetto back road ride. We can roll our Mamasitas & I can motivate (or as you call it, shame) you into staying in your big ring the whole ride.

Ha! Like I you need you to shame me. My whole life is based on shame. That would be great, and I could load up an iPod full of Smiths songs for you.

don't be the guy racing mountain bikes while listening to his i-pod. it totally infuriates me, especially when they're in their own little world and pay no attention to you coming/trying to get by etc. One bud in, ok, both in, not cool.

Rick, I would never do both ears. I really don't think I could concentrate during a race with even one in. I freaking hate that too. I had a woman in front of me at the 101 one year, riding along singing, meanwhile I'm trying to pass going UP hill and asking for a pass.... NOTHING. Ended up biffing and she rode away singing. GRRRRRR!

Great blog. Found your blog while looking for information on Dos Niners and endurance racing (just bought one to start racing). Entering my 40's and looking for a new challenge.

As for headphones, I have some Air Drives (airdrives.com) that allow outside sound in during a ride. Maybe those would work better during a race than a one bud ride? You can hear other sounds with both methods, but this way you can tell where the sound is a bit better.

Thanks for the laughs and info, and good luck racing and with XXC this year.

Chris, Thanks a bunch man. Glad you dig it. I'll have to look into those buds.
