So Starts Base Redux

Yeah, Base Redux. This is the time of year that I would like to be in the woods, doing what some folks might call a "Build Period," focusing on race specific needs- nutrition, pacing, etc., But I would call f*cking off in the woods on my mountain bike trying to get the rusty skills lubed up. OR getting ready to head south to race 5 hours at Hilbert.

Butttttttt, we all know that Old Man Winter f*cked that up, and dosed the race punch with bitter, slushy run off from his enlarged nasty ass prostrate. Dick! But whataryougonnado? Time on the trainer, weights (till I felt dumb lifting heavy stuff for no reason) and jogging on the treadmill worked to keep me moving, but as I mentioned yesterday and in just about every post in 2010, it did NOT satisfy my ride mojo.

But like a B-12 shot in the ass, I got a nice rush of mojo today and it felt damn good. Crisp temps in the high 30s and sun. Friggin' sun! Believe me this ride was nothing to write home about, clocking in at just 2:35, but it was 2:35 outside, and not in my basement doing some sort of crap pseudo exercise.

Rode the Mamasita (shocking), and felt good. I guess over the comng days or week (I hope!) I will start a Base II, and try to build some ride time back up in my legs (which sort of resemble white tubes of cottage cheese with hair stubble).

If you ever ride a geared 29er on the road do you ever notice that is one certain type of hill that is a real pain in the ass. The small hills... no problem. The BIG hill... no problem. The medium sort of hills that kick up at the end bust my balls every time! They sort of do it on my compact geared road bike too, but the road bike is light enough that standing is a bit easier and less taxing that muscling at 26 lb. 29er around. Taking speed into the hill is a little easier (for me) on a road bike to. The 29er just seems to spin out too quick. Maybe I will just hold on to the Campeon a bit longer and get her a tune up PDQ.

I will say it was super nice having the Mamasita out there today. Lots of road tube pinching pot holes and ash on the back roads.

Took some pics, had a good sweat, and hope to try again tomorrow or Saturday. Tomorrow might be out since I have a TON of XXC packing and mailing to do.

Damn if felt good to ride....

Later.

ha... I lug that Ferrous around all the time and I will confirm that my leg strength has skyrocketed - I always just rode my road bike before this year.

Those climbs are a kick in the nuts, but they get better with time..ha. I have a few good 45 minute "hills" like the one you mention. Man, working late is fun.

No joke it's nice to get outside. I have one ride on dirt (not including dirt roads) since Thanksgiving. I may be developing some sort of complex.
